Ballylesson Prize-night

28th October 2021

With the relaxation of some of the rules regarding the  covid virus , clubs are able to look at meeting up more and the Ballylesson club held their annual Prize giving night recently in the clubrooms and my thanks to Dorothy Smyth for details  of what  she says was a great evening of craic and celebration . The evening began with a beautiful buffet after which the chairman Paul Johnston welcomed all the members and the club Presidents Mervin Patterson and  Alan McWilliams . Paul thanked Mervin for his generous donation to the club and he also thanked John Albert & Colin Smyth for all their hard work on Friday & Saturday nights during the racing . Secretary John Albert was unable to attend the presentation as he had the flu but he sent a word of thanks to Paul , Alan & Davy for all their hard work for  as he said even when they were not sending birds they were there every Friday night to put the birds through, thanks was also extended to all the  other members who had helped out in any way .
After this it was over to the Club Presidents to present the Cups and Trophies . Topping the list this year was the partnership of C & D Smyth &  sons who had an excellent season winning the Open from the Mallow classic and other open positions throughout the season  with the ever present John Patterson next having several 2nd,3rd & 4th open placings . Mackey & Lockhart were 3rd and P & C Johnston were 4th with the rest of the members getting their share of the trophies . After the presentation it was time to sit back and relax and Dorothy reckons that after such a good evening there wouldn’t be too many lofts scrapped the next day !!.

Once again it is my sad duty to report to the fancy the death of two prominent  Combine members with the passing of Paddy Lue  who raced as P. Lue & Son  with the Downpatrick club and then Adam Palmer just three weeks after his wife Isobel  predeceased him  .Both men were long time fanciers held in high esteem  and both had obtained many successes over the years . We extend our deepest sympathy to Paddy’s wife May and the family circle and to Adam’s sons David & Andrew and their families  at this very sad time .
